Technorati, which comScore rated in September 2009 as the 5th largest social media property, published its 2009 State of the Blogosphere the other day.  After surveying 2,900 bloggers, this annual review seeks to provide answers to many questions including:

  • What’s the #1 reason people blog?
  • Can you really make a living blogging?
  • What’s the #1 success metric for a professional blogger?
  • How many bloggers work in the traditional media?

Among its key findings, we learn that brands are benefitting from blogging, and here’s how:

  • 70% of all bloggers blog about brands.
  • 1/3 of part-time and self-employed bloggers blog about brands at least once per week.
  • 72% of part-time professional bloggers use blogs to attract new clients to their business.
  • Professional (self-employed) bloggers say that 22% of their blogs are about their company.
  • 53% of Professional (corporate) bloggers use blogs to attract new clients to their businesses.
  • Professional bloggers find value in blogging about their brand 35% more in 2009 from 2008.
  • Micro-blogging and social networks caused a 66% decrease in blogging for some bloggers.
  • 73% of the bloggers surveyed believe that blogs are being taken more seriously than ever before.
  • Bloggers have seriously increased their Twitter usage and find it to be the #1 way to promote their blogs.

And to those of you who only want to know how all of this blogging impacts your ROI, 63% attribute product and service-related purchases to the credibility generated by blogs.
